CD Covers - Which one?

Post by Hokuspokus »

It's certainly nice to have cover pictures in the catalog, but do we want/need printable CD covers too?
Most people don't burn CDs but if you do it's nice to have a ready made cover for it. On LibriVox we have jewel case CD covers, I only use origami CD sleeves, no plastic box needed.
I've done a pdf for jewel case and one for origami sleeve. http://ge.tt/5VrQ2rC1
In case you don't know the origami sleeves, here is a folding instruction: http://www.wikihow.com/Fold-a-CD-Cover- ... Copy-Paper
What would you prefer to have as download on our catalog pages?

As for me, I never burn CDs, so just a square cover/picture would be fine, they show on my mp3 player and it is nice :)

I am not exactly sure, but Nadine's opinion sounds somehow right. Burning CDs is more a relic from the last millenium ...
Its nice to have the opion of real CD covers, but I am not sure if it's worth the affort.
and on the long run: none will print/burn them anymore. But a little image for players would be nice though.

I'm more optimistic about CDs. Sure, only a small percentage will burn them, but that target group might be important: Home-made CDs of free audiobooks make great gifts! And it helps spread the word, a bit like a business card. The world needs more freely licensed, fully legal content on home-made CDs

In particular, while I'm not very good at designing myself - if someone wants to do so, by all means, I won't stop them. On the contrary.

Hokuspokus, CD covers are not completely square; but do you think it would be possible to turn an uploaded square picture, which is good for MP3 players and smartphones, automatically into a CD sleeve? We could have a template where the picture gets inserted. Then, with one upload, we have two use cases covered.

EDIT: answering my own question, I see that origami covers are square. Perfect. Automatic image processing goes on to the wishlist.

I do a lot of CDs lately because one of my colleges doesn't even have a computer. Yes, there are still people without a PC, without mp3 players but with a CD player in the livingroom ;)

Viktor,
I don't think automated covers are good idea. The text on the back side is to different from project to project. You have to vary the size and spaces between the lines to make it look nice. I use 3 or 4 different templates for my covers for more or less information, chapter list or no chapter list, depending on the project. The pictures for mp3 players are 300X300 pixels, for a cover you need at least 600x600.I'd rather have pictures only.

CD Covers!!

If I have to choose just one option, then Picture only.
But I think it would be nice to have all options available!

That's exactly what I mean, alot of manual work ... I don't know, if it's worth the affort, .. though I also agree that it is nice to have choices ...

I suggest we keep them optional. No one is forced to provide a cover, but if someone wants to, s/he is welcome to do so. The person who does the work should always think it's worth the effort 8-)

I like the Origami-Covers, too. When I finish a Solo at LibriVox, I always try to add both jewelcase and origami covers to the project. The origami cover has the advantage, that the coverpicture can be cut out and put into a CD-case, too. But I agree to Victor that no one is forced to provide a cover. May be there is someone else who likes creating covers and adds them to the projects which don't have one :)

So we will have no real covers, only cover pictures. The pictures are the fun part to make.

How do we go on now?
With out an actual cover there is no place to write down where is picture comes from. We should keep that information somewhere so we can check pdnes. I'd suggest we deal with covers in the project threads and the cover creator posts the source there.

There is one thing I don't like about the way the covers are managed at LV - that anyone can make a cover for a project. It doesn't feel right that the soloist has to say "Thank you, how nice" between gritted teeth. I suggest that the cover creator asks the reader or BC first, if the cover is OK. And the reader or BC really should tell if the cover doesn't really fit. I asked for the covers I made for our catalog and got much better ideas and even a finished cover from the reader in some cases.
