As a start I'd like to suggest a collection of short texts by Kurt Tucholsky 1923-35.

Tucholsky ist ein recht bekannter Autor, die Texte sind meist kurz, interessant und überraschend aktuell.

Same here - I always thought it a shame that Tucholsky could not be read in total.
More German: Kafka Der Prozess, Das Schloss and any other post-humous publications of his work.

Man könnte später von Tucholsky auch Schloß Gripsholm (1931) lesen, z.B.

Tucholsky find' ich gut, und ich habe für den Anfang schon eine fertige Aufnahme auf meiner Festplatte (eine meiner ersten, aber Hokuspokus musste damals mich auf die urheberrechtlichen Feinheiten aufmerksam machen und sie musste vom LV-Server verschwinden): "Wie kommen die Löcher in den Käse?"
