PD in 2019

Post by Viktor »

A happy and healthy new year to everybody!

Among this year's list of authors that have arrived in the Public Domain (in life+70 countries),
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_in_p ... +_70_years
the writers most known to me are Egon Erwin Kisch and Karl Valentin (and on the musical side, Franz Lehár).

https://publicdomainreview.org/collecti ... s-of-2019/
does not bring any more life+70 authors but reminded me that content created in 1923 now enters the US public domain. And indeed, LV is taking it: https://forum.librivox.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=72912

Thanks Viktor, this is really cool! I usually have such a stack of books I want to record I don't pay that much attention to the new stuff on 1 January, but it's nice to be reminded of new and exciting things that are available.

I don't know if there has been much discussion with PD books changing about projects moving from here to there. Would that even be possible in the future - importing 'ready made' Legamus projects over to LV when they become PD in the US? It's very speculative, but I thought I'd ask. I like the idea of things I've recorded here being available very quickly for new listeners in January of any given year, both the few things I've done here in the past and a couple of projects I would like to do at a later date. It's a very loose question, but I thought I might as well ask now!

I'm all for it! Legamus has always been about recording works that are OK in life+70 countries but not for LV. As the situation changes for LV, so it does for us. From a quick glance, I haven't seen anything from 1923 that would need migration right now. For the future, we'll just have to work out the details - do we need a new disclaimer mentioning LV instead of Legamus? The more time passes between initial publication on Legamus and transition to LV, the harder a new disclaimer would be to get.

Cool! I thought it might be a bit of a fishing expedition, but I'm glad I asked.

I think (though I have by no means gone through the entire catalogue) that there is one thing from 1923 - The Prophet by Khalil Gibran. https://legamus.eu/blog/?p=76 But I think you're right, and for the vast majority of the projects here it's something far, far away on the horizon.

I wasn't sure about the disclaimer, either - I'd be willing to record those, but I'm reluctant to look too far ahead. I'd be willing to post some sort of written disclaimer in the project thread along the lines of 'I freely release this recording into the PD as its copyright expires in other territories' just so that my intentions are completely clear and it could still theoretically be duplicated on LV if I'm not available to record new disclaimers. I don't know if that would be sufficient to allow it to be transplanted to LV, but I'd like to think that something could be worked out!

There's a licensing issue. CC0 is as close as you can get to US public domain, but we should still ask the readers before putting anything elsewhere. The Prophet however is under a different license which does not allow commercial usage.

It's certainly a very good idea to ask our "CC0 readers" now whether they are fine with an eventual copy at LV.

I have heard that Hitler's Mein Kampf is in the PD now. It would be interesting if anybody would find an English translation. (No, I am not a nazi. I run an non-profit educational blog called historyradio.org)

I would like to point out that The Great Gatsby is PD in Europe or countries with life + 70, while it is not in the US. Therefore librivox won't do it, but you can :)

Hello Michael,

welcome to Legamus!

Yes, Mein Kampf may be in the PD in some of our countries... but just because it is, I don't feel obliged to plan recording it. In fact, if nobody here is interested in recording it, that would be very fine with me.

As for an English translation - we don't have any non-public sources, e.g. your googling is as good as mine :-)

Hello Michaelwy,

There's some good news! Martin Reyto has already recorded The Great Gatsby, so you can start listening this weekend if you wish:

Enjoy!
