I see no disclaimer in this project. What am I supposed to do about that?

I have uploaded Section 17 sans disclaimer for the time being.

http://ge.tt/6vQxgZV/v/0?c

42:44
39.1 MB

A few notes:

I became conscious of at least one definite mistranscription, so checked with http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=2tbS ... &q&f=false (preview, so some pages were unavailable).

I have accordingly made the following changes to the PGA text:

7:53 'with its tempered colours that looked as if they had filtered through the years'
'filtered' read for 'faltered' in PGA text

9:31 The corncrake cried it too
Added the 'it'

10:46 'So he went at her side, humbly.'
'at' read for 'to' in the PGA text

26:57 Read: 'I was a garden but he ran in me as in grass'
instead of 'I was a garden and he ran in me as in the grass'

41:18 Read: 'Nor am I a sundial foolish at night.'
'nor' read for 'now' in the PGA text

41:49 Read 'black bird' for 'blackbird' in the PGA text

Hello everybody,
Nadine handed the MC hat over to me.

As Ruth asked, what is the license for this project? It's a group project, so it should be CC0, no? Which would give us this disclaimer.

Algy, in that same thread you suggested that the BC reads all the disclaimers. While this does not seem to be what we have been doing since that discussion from mid-2011, it would make a lot of sense in this project. Do you want to do that?

All the best, Viktor.

Thanks Viktor

I am proposing to use the following intro/disclaimer for each section:

Legamus presents Collected Short Stories by D.H. Lawrence. This recording may be distributed and adapted freely for any purpose, as long as Legamus is credited.

Will this be OK?

Cheers

Algy

That would be CC-BY. For CC0, you'd want to omit the "as long as Legamus is credited". There are some countries in which you cannot waive credit of ownership, but AFAIK in some others you can. The idea of CC0 is to be as close to the US public domain as possible.

(I hope I got that right, if not, someone correct me please!)

About the "Legamus presents"... well, if you wish... I'd have suggested a simpler Collected Short Stories by D.H. Lawrence. This Legamus recording may be distributed and adapted freely for any purpose.

It's not my cat, it's a CC-licensed image from Flickr of a cat in a shelter for abandoned animals. I liked the powerful look in his/her eyes. I'm a cat lover, but I don't have the possibility of having one myself right now :)

Simple is good. I am more than happy to use your suggested disclaimed.

Could you please send me a password for the Legamus uploader?

Hi Algy,
access data for the uploader has been sent to you in a PM.

The Legamus uploader is meant for temporary files, as an alternative to ge.tt. The final files will be on my ge.tt account - that has two advantages: only one URL for everything, and the possibility of listening online through their interface. (At some point in the future, our server will be able to handle "final files", too... but until then, ge.tt is best.)

Am I right that you want to prepend your disclaimer to the files, then upload them to the Legamus uploader? Then I fetch them, double-check the ID3 tags, and upload them to their final destination? OK!

However, if you didn't do any other manipulation on the files, you can just upload your disclaimer and let me put it in front of the recordings. As you like. Just trying to save you some upload time :)

Ruth

I'm not sure if it's a sin to listen before publication on legamus, but I sampled some of your story. Your voice is more beautiful than ever; up there with Dame Janet Baker in the quiet passages of Mahler songs.

Hi Martin

Ah, great to hear the voice from the primitive Methodist chapel! Your reading (only one section, alas) was also something very special.

For those who are interested in reading more D.H.Lawrence the following titles are available through Project Gutenberg Australia:
http://gutenberg.net.au/pages/lawrence.html
Kangaroo (1923)
The Fox (1923)
The Ladybird (1923)
The Captain's Doll (1923)
St Mawr (1925)
The Plumed Serpent (1926)
The Rainbow (1926)
Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928)
The Man Who Died (1929)
The Virgin and the Gypsy (1930)

Cheers

I don't mind recording my own disclaimer, it's a little odd to think of someone else's voice doing it for me.

I'd also think that in future, for legal reasons, we should agree the disclaimer before anyone records anything. I'm not sure I'd want to record under every CC licence that's available and as a contributor, I ought to be able to make an informed choice before I do the work.

I must admit, I found it rather peculiar too. The point of the disclaimer, surely, is that the reader places the recording in the public domain, not some other bloke.

I have to defend Algy on this one. This project is particular: it got started when the debate about disclaimers and licenses was still going on, and he voiced the idea of recording a common disclaimer for everyone early in the thread. No reader complained or asked questions, until Ruth did a short time ago. And by now, we do have the agreement that group projects are CC0, and that with solo readings the reader can choose a different CC license. If a group project gets started today, we have all these foundations :)

Still, as it's me who is doing the "final upload" tonight or Sunday evening, anyone unhappy with a "foreign disclaimer" is welcome to record it him/herself, I'll edit it into the recording. I hope Algy won't mind? - Of course, don't feel pressed for time; if I upload things today, and you want your own disclaimer, you can always send it later to me. On the other hand, if you insist that the final version has your disclaimer immediately, please say so and we'll wait with the "final upload".

Can everybody live with that? :)

Martin, feel free to download any temporary recordings, whether they are on my server or on ge.tt. Just don't submit the links to any public web site.

Well, it was mentioned early in the thread, and Darvinia asked later too, but wasn't made clear that the readers wouldn't be doing it when the wording was finalised. I will go with the flow, I suppose, as it would be just as odd for just one or two people to read their own. It's often done like that in professional audiobooks, I expect.

As you like! My only goal is that you are all happy with the final result and your parts of it. Personally, I don't feel mixed disclaimers would be too awkward. Listeners are allowed to do all kinds of edits.

We can also turn it the other way around: Please upload all your disclaimers, or tell me that you're fine with the common one!

(True, in this thread it was only said that the disclaimers will be added later. In another thread, at the same point in time, came up the idea of a common disclaimer.)
