I can do that later - consider it a special service, because this project is not yet completed and therefore not officially published ;)

Just to let everybody know that I'm fine with tracks being re-uploaded to a server where we can actually get to them! Is it OK now from the server Viktor has connected to or would you like me to upload them to ge.tt? I'm happy to do whatever helps so long as I don't have a tight deadline.

The MW contains now links that should work. Thank you Andrew! My goal is that you, readers and DPL, don't have to worry about the low-level stuff such as file servers :)

Hi

PL is all OK. There were a number of plosives here and there, but not too obtrusive - are you still using the same equipment?

Best wishes
Martin

Edited to add: I've updated the status on the Magic Window, but there's no filename entered against Section 28. Could you please add that, in case I make a mess of trying to do it?

I'm still using the same equipment but there seem to be far more plosives than there used to be. I have tried to edit the worst out but there are still many left in. I'm just hoping they're not too obtrusive. The recording volume (before I amplify) also seems much quieter. It's frustrating when I have to waste so much time sorting out technical problems of the equipment when I should be concentrating on sorting out the problems with my reading.

Anyway, I've uploaded the following files:
Section 29: http://ge.tt/6cb7MJK1
44.7MB 48.51mins

Section 30: http://ge.tt/9QAqOJK1
38.1MB 41.39mins

Section 31: http://ge.tt/9TX1QJK1
44.5MB 48.42mins.

Hello again

I've PL'd the first of the 3 (Section 29) and it's fine throughout for accuracy. The level was sufficient, too. There are very few noticeable sound-particles, and none was distracting, in my opinion. I just kept letting those great waves of sentences break over my ears. Hope to complete the listening tomorrow.

Best wishes
Martin

Had the pleasure of listening to the remaining two sections this morning (30, 31) and again there are no significant problems and all was PL OK.

Section 32 is now uploaded at http://ge.tt/5neMKtY1/v/0
39.4 MB
43.07 mins.

I was given a microphone pop screen for my birthday. I haven't tried it yet but hope that it works and that after this section there will be fewer pops to deal with or ignore.

Has ge.tt stopped operating? I can't get it to open and when I look for ge.tt related websites they are all listed as "Cached" which I think means that they no longer function.

It looks as if there are at least temporary problems.

You can always use our own uploader, I just sent you the access data in a Private Message.

I have backups for all data that you sent to ge.tt for this project, nothing is lost. But as you can see, it's always a good idea if the reader also keeps his copy!

Hi Andrew

Section 34 is PL OK throughout. Some dazzling writing in there. Listening on the train, surrounded by the languorous drawling accents of the young ladies of Godalming College, I was aghast at the difference between Proust's hypersensitive appreciation of these Balbec girls and my petulant fiddling with the iPod's volume controls.

Best wishes
Martin

Thank you for PLing, Martin. Hope the blooming Godalming girls didn't distract you too much from the blooming girls of Balbec! I keep looking on the train to see if there is a person who looks like your voice but all of my suspects get off or on at the wrong stops.

Anyway, it's starting to feel as if I'm nearly out of the Grove (foolish thing to say!) so I wanted to check a couple of things. The book summary I originally wrote, based on the Wikipedia entry, only describes the sequence as a whole, so could we add in an extra paragraph at the end and remove the "(Summary by Wikipedia)" at the end of the existing summary:

"Within a Budding Grove" (A l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleur", literally "In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower"), the second volume in the sequence, won the Prix Goncourt in 1919. In it, the narrator meets several characters who are to prove very important in his life and in the novel - the aristocrat Robert de Saint-Loup, an eccentric snob called the Baron de Charlus and a group of girls including a certain Albertine Simonet. (Summary by Wikipedia and Andrew Coleman)

According to the instructions for what I'm supposed to say at the end of the book I'm supposed to say "Coming soon..." I don't know whether that's to get me to promise to record The Guermantes Way or just plugging other Legamus recordings (if so, how do I pronounce the Polish titles?!). I'm not that keen on saying "coming soon" for two reasons - one is that recordings can take a lot longer than expected (Denny and I took eight years to complete Swann's Way), the other is that I hope our recordings will be listened to in several years' time, by which time the "Coming Soon" titles may have been around for ages. What I propose is "End of Section 38. End of Within a Budding Grove by Marcel Proust translated by CK Scott-Moncrieff. The next book in the sequence is The Guermantes Way. This has been a Legamus recording. For more information or to volunteer please visit legamus.eu." Would that be OK?

I'm about 95 per cent likely to do The Guermantes Way next. I do want to do my first solo for LibriVox but I haven't yet found a writer as worth the effort as Marcel. I'll make a definite decision once I've finished Budding Grove. I'm already scared of the French in the Guermantes dedication!

Hi Andrew,

so Within a Budding Grove is your first ever solo recording? Wow!
It's very brave to choose such a long text and even braver to keep on working on it section by section, step by step. Congratulations!

The summary is updated. Please have a look at the first post and see if everything is as you want it to be. I'll pick it from there at cataloging time.

The "coming soon" bit is a relict from the beginnings of Legamus. We were still discussing what to say at that time. Please say:
"End of Within a Budding Grove by Marcel Proust. For more information or to volunteer, please visit Legamus.eu"

re: The French dedication.
You can always ask a French speaker to record it so you can mimic it. And for a dedication, the French speaker might even be OK to lend you their voice so you can copy that recording into your section.

re: An Author worth the effort.
Many Proust fans also like Flaubert, Stendhal, Zola or Balzac.

Hokuspokus wrote:Hi Andrew,

I had recorded substantial chunks of other books, including the Combray section of Swann's Way so I had some idea of what I was taking on, although I learnt some basic Audacity stuff I didn't know while I was recording this!

Thank you for the kind words and for updating the summary.

At some point I will do that.

I'm afraid I read Proust despite his being French, not because of it. I only did French to O Level 30 years ago and the only times I've been to France were a school daytrip to Boulogne when I was about 13 and a stopover at Paris airport on a flight back from Italy. So I'm not very confident on French pronunciations! I might read a Maupassant short story but, if I were ever to dare to record a complete book by a French author other than Proust, I would probably choose Pascal's Provincial Letters. I've volunteered to record Pliny's Letters plus a character in a Lewis Carroll novel for Librivox so, once I've finished editing Budding Grove, I'll concentrate on those for a bit. My daughter is starting school so I might have a few hours a week more to record in but I will have to see how things work out before committing myself to another major chunk of Marcel. I can't see myself not recording Guermantes in the next few years but I don't think anybody else is likely to pre-empt me to recording it (Several readers have recorded Swann's Way in English, John Rowe and Neville Jason both recorded Budding Grove but I'm only aware of Neville Jason making it beyond there. And he gets paid for it!)

Anyway, Section 35 is now uploaded at http://ge.tt/4ztQYGu1/v/0.
34.1 MB, 37.17 mins.

The lines "As Andrée was extremely nice to me, as we went along I said to her everything about Albertine that seemed calculated to make me attractive to the latter. Andrée replied that she too was very fond of Albertine, thought her charming; in spite of which the compliments that I was paying to her friend did not seem altogether to please her" made me laugh out loud.
