[Collected Short Stories] by [D.H.Lawrence (1885 - 1930)]

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page:
http://legamus.eu/blog/?p=228

David Herbert Richards Lawrence (11 September 1885 – 2 March 1930) was an English novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, literary critic and painter. His collected works represent an extended reflection upon the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation. In them, Lawrence confronts issues relating to emotional health and vitality, spontaneity, and instinct. (Summary by wikipedia)
This collection contains 14 of Lawrence's lesser known short works. (Note by Algy Pug)

Jeez, I sure hope the second section will be claimed before 2050

I'll MC this, no reason to leave it hanging there for days.

DPL anyone?

ETA: Algy, I've added part of the template that was missing. It's at the end, in small. Could you fill it up please? We need that info somewhere.

Thank you Ashleigh Jane for offering to PL.

Here is the first submission:

Section 3 - Her Turn
http://ge.tt/8F4RlW5?c
13:24

I have set the file via Mediafire because I have a paid subscription with them and because it is much faster (for me) than the French site. Edit by Viktor: Uploaded to ge.tt

I haven't included any disclaimer, but will patch one in when the format is decided.

To anyone passing by - this is wonderfully readable stuff. Come and join in!

Cheers

May I please read Section 7, parts 1 & 2 - Mother & Daughter?

When is the deadline, and can someone please advise me on the pronunciation of the surname 'Bodoin'? I'm guessing it's 'Bod 1' sounding a bit Frenchy?

Thank you,

Carol

Thank you Carol

Great to have you joining the project.

Both sections of Mother and Daughter are yours.

Completion date for this project will be 1 November 2011.

The pronunciation of "Bodoin" is up to you, but your suggestion sounds pretty good.

Cheers

Algy

It's good to see you're here, too!

Hi chigozie

Section 22 is yours.

I will work out something with the disclaimer soon. If you are ready to record please go ahead - the disclaimer can be edited in later.

Hi, I have an artistic question, to do with the accents in the piece I have chosen ("Things").

The characters in the story are all American, and I have been using an American accent for them throughout -- for one thing, this helps to distinguish between narration and dialogue (my own accent is dreadfully English). However, in the story they move to Europe for 12 years, and at the end of this there is a line of narration as follows:
The Melvilles had an entirely English accent and manner--almost--a little Italian and French here and there.
This immediately follows a line of dialogue, and it sounds pretty silly to use the American accent here. So, I could
  • use English throughout (but this also sounds weird to me, because they start off in America, and as I said it is useful to have the distinction between narration and dialogue)
  • or American throughout and ignore the line
,
  • or shift to be gradually more English during the time they spend in Europe (I'm not sure that there is enough dialogue for this to be clear, and indeed I don't think my accents are good enough to pull it off)
  • or something else
What I've ended up doing below is American for all accents apart from the one directly before the "entirely english" phrase... (at 19:35) This avoids it sounding quite so jarring to my ears, but doesn't really make much sense if you think about it.

Finally, my American accent is a little shaky anyway (see, for example, 26:25)

Otherwise, I think I'm done:

Hi Chigozie

Ashleigh Jane will PL this for you. However, I had a brief listen, in particular to the exchange at 26:35. To a non-American the accents certainly did not sound jarring.

Speaking as a non-expert, I believe that there is a great a variety of accents on the American continent as in the UK, but the regional differences are more subtle. For most of us non-Americans, the "American accent" is a poorly executed version of the way we think the people talk in Texas. The accents of people living in the north east corner of the US, from where your characters in the story come from, are particularly elusive for the non- American.

I liked the reading very much. I though the conversational delivery really captured the episodic nature of the character's lives.

Perhaps you would like to read one (or more) of the other stories.

Cheers

The Witch is yours.

Thank you.
