After Long Silence by William Butler Yeats (*1865 - † 1939)
Yeats's poem 'After Long Silence' was written late in life. In it, he reflects on his relationship with the author Olivia Shakespear.

This project brings you recordings by seven different Legamus readers.
(Summary by Newgatenovelist)
Text source: http:// (please only read from this text!)
Speech after long silence; it is right,
All other lovers being estranged or dead,
Unfriendly lamplight hid under its shade,
The curtains drawn upon unfriendly night,
That we descant and yet again descant
Upon the supreme theme of Art and Song:
Bodily decrepitude is wisdom; young
We loved each other and were ignorant.

A note for the MC: this is an experiment in much the same vein as the weekly and fortnightly poetry projects on LV. I don't know how many readers will fancy recording a version of the poem, but it's worth trying!

I've slightly tweaked the info on the tags and intro/outro - please let me know if I need to change anything else.

I think that's everything for now!

Hi,

while I love the idea, I fear there are not that many people active on Legamus. It's mostly people who have a passion for a certain book but can't record it for Librivox.

When I can remember, how to move a project, I'll move it into reader's wanted. Let's see if we get any entries and go from there. :)

Hi! First person to reply, so that's a start!

You're right, it is pretty quiet round here. However, there are some Yeats enthusiasts out there, and I'm hoping a one-off late-career poem will prove tempting. I could be wrong of course, but it might also be the case that some members simply don't stop by regularly and so haven't seen the project. I'd like to start spreading the word this month and see if it appeals to anyone. I remain absurdly optimistic that will!

Hi Erin,
What a great idea. I'm always happy to support a project based on absurd optimism!

I wasn't sure about the mp3 tags - they're automatic at LV, so I've just taken a wild guess on some things to get the ball rolling. The main issue is section number. I'm not sure how you were intending to allocate those to readers wishing to participate. In the LV weekly, people obviously use their initials, and the section numbers are allocated after upload. I've just taken a wild guess and allocated myself Section 1. Also, it seems odd to have the Album tag being different for every section. I'm not sure if that's the legamus way but it seems more logical to make it the same across all sections???
Also I can't access the Magic Window, but that may just be because there are no sections yet.
Just let me know if I need to change anything, or feel free to edit my tags if that's easier.

Here's my attempts:

Hi Ian,

First out of the gate! Thank you very much for your version. I like it (and it's PL OK!). I also just saw that you've been here for a year now. I can't believe the last Yeats project has already been a year...

Thank you for asking about the tags. You're absolutely right, that was my mistake about having readers' initials in the album line when it ought to have been the track title. It's fixed now. The section numbering is going to be pretty unscientific - it'll go in the order of whoever shows up, when they show up (that's how the multilingual short works collections here did it, and it seems to have worked).

I've changed your tags so your initials are in the track title and reuploaded. One nice thing about Legamus projects is that reuploading creates a totally different link, so it's easier to track versions through a thread if need be!
https://upload.legamus.eu/simple/files/ ... _yeats.mp3

Just to confuse you, each project's MW gets its own login specific to that audiobook. And at the moment, this one doesn't have a MW, so there really was no way you'd be able to log in!
Erin

PS This sounds terrific.

Thanks Erin - that all makes sense.

I hope this project gets the interest that it deserves. It's the sort of poem that can no doubt bear many different readings.

Hi Erin. I have recorded my section and given it the title:

afterlongsilence_02_yeats.mp3

I can change the '02' to whatever.... I don't know how to upload it to the mc's folder and have no password for that...???

Thanks,

Barbara

Oh dear. I have uploaded section 2 several times using https://upload.legamus.eu/simple/. But all I get is :
Uploading afterlongsilence_02_yeats.mp3 — 100% of 0.723 MB

and no link to copy and paste.

afterlongsilence_02_yeats.mp3 passed checker....

I have done something wrong...but what?

Sigh,

Barbara

Don't assume it's you. Just because the kit works 98% of the time doesn't mean it doesn't have funny fits every now and then!

I'm not certain what the uploader is up to. It sounds as if it's doing most of what it ought to do, but I'm not certain why it isn't showing you the link beyond just being pig-headed.

Sometimes, even at the best of times, when I upload I have to open the uploaded file in another tab (ctrl + click) and then copy and paste the full link from that tab. It's not perfect, but it gets the job done when I can't think of anything else.

I'll reiterate that I don't think it's necessarily anything you've done. (And perhaps at the weekend it will go back to behaving itself if you try to upload again, just to prove a point!) We'll work out whatever this glitch is, although I am sorry that your first Legamus upload is giving you grief.

Have been trying to upload a reading but the uploader keeps stopping at 7% and just stays there. Doesn't seem to be anything wrong with file, though my next step will be to re-create it. just thought I'd check if any tips for when this occurs.

Hi Erin. I have tried to upload numerous times using both Firefox and Chrome. I've exported the file from Audacity three times once as "test.mp3". The progress bar in the uploader tells me the files have been uploaded - the html reads: <span id="progressbar-label">Uploading test.mp3 — 100% of 0.723 MB</span>. There is no link. Nothing at all to edit or paste.

If it's of any use, I am using openSUSE Leap 15.1. I was using an earlier version of openSUSE when I successfully uploaded files to a Legamus project years ago so there is probably a simple solution. But, regretfully, I'll have to give up for now.

Hi Barbara and Peter,

First of all, I'm sorry this is giving you so much trouble. This was meant to be a relatively straightforward exercise!

As neither of you have had any luck at all with the uploader I've asked one of the admins to check it and see if there's something on that end causing glitches. You're right, it's probably a simple solution, it's just annoying that it's decided to faff about right now. I'll post again when I know a bit more about what's going on behind the scenes.

JFYI: I contacted the forum admin and asked him to take a look. It's working for me, but he might be able to see something server-side or have an idea what the issue on your end could be. Also, if the file was already uploaded successfully, he can probably find it on the server and maybe provide a link. :)

Hello!

Very sorry about the issue, which was not related to Legamus itself. It should since a few days have been corrected. I hope uploading now works for everybody.

HURRAH! It's always something to celebrate when technical problems are resolved.

Viktor, thank you so very much for doing whatever poking and prodding needed to be done behind the scenes to get it back on track. I have a question, though this is not urgent - is there any reason the MW should have been affected by fiddling with the server? I'm not able to access it tonight. There's no hurry as I can always fill that in later, but I thought I ask now.

Barbara - hearty thanks for your reading. It's PL OK. And thank you, too, for being so patient.

Erin

Edited to add: Viktor, whatever you've done with the MW is great. Thank you!

With a teaser like that, how could I resist?

Do you have the link still, by any chance?
