Many books are waiting for your voice!
Please always check carefully that the author is dead for more than 70 years, before you start recording.

We record only books published in or after 1923. If you want to record a book first published before 1923, please visit librivox.org

What do we know about Project Gutenberg Europe?

To my shame, I didn't even know it existed, but it doesn't seem to work for me. I get "Could not connect to database server".

EDITED TO ADD: Used with care Project Gutenberg Australia and Project Gutenberg Canada should be very useful, of course.

Nice!
Project Gutenberg Europe is follower of Project Gutenberg philosophy, focused primarily on digitizing European cultures, under European copyright laws.

Project Gutenberg is the oldest producer of free electronic books (eBooks or etexts) on the Internet. The collection of more than 17.000 eBooks was produced by hundreds of volunteers. Most of the Project Gutenberg eBooks are older literary works that are in the public domain in the United States.
So it's like PG in the US, except all of this is PD in Europe. Makes it easier to sort out, but I have not yet found something that is there but not in the other PG.

For German there is
Zeno.org (commercial)
http://www.zeno.org/Literatur/W/Inhaltsverzeichnis
Literaturnetz (private)
http://literaturnetz.org/autoren
Wikisource
http://de.wikisource.org/wiki/Hauptseite

Oh, and Gutenberg Europe is not so reliable. Hesse is not pd here.

For Portuguese I use

http://www.dominiopublico.gov.br

It's a government-run project with PD works in Portuguese and other languages (even though most of the "other languages" stuff is taken from Gutenberg anyway.)

The National Library of Portugal is digitalizing all their rare documents collection, which is amazing. I hope they get past the maps and photographs soon, though - that's most of what they have. But there are a few books as well.

It would be nice to have a sticky with a compilation of these ideas, I think?

Sticky is a good idea.
If kattekliek doesn't mind, we could use her initial post to make a list.

Over at LV there is a list with some more sources.

Probably there won't be many Hungarians here, but we have our electronic library http://mek.oszk.hu/

Not all the books are PD, it is more like a library for students who are lazy to go to The Library

Hi dii and welcome!

I was just about to edit the first post with the book list we have over at LV. Thanks for the link and the warning. I added it to the list.

Thanks for editting my post, HokusPokus (I think it' s you who did that?) :) I'll take out my original posting, just the list is OK.

Our policy is not to overlap with LV, right? I.e.: all pre-1923 books should be over at their place and not legamus.eu? If so, I think we should put this in the first post too.

When looking for a text on Chanukkah, I came across this German site
http://www.judaica-frankfurt.de/
with Jewish literature until 1933. They have novels and poems, too. Not everything is PD, so one needs to check.

Yes, for the moment we only do books, that can't be done at LV. There might be a time, when we have the same resources and routine. Then we can think about pre-1923 books here, too. But until then it's easier, more practical and saver to do pre-1923 books at LV.
I'll add a line to the first post.

This site is extracted from Elli's solo on children's stories:
http://papinga.bis.uni-oldenburg.de/ret ... lindex.php
It's mostly German children's books, but some are English or French as well.

Welcome, chigozie. Just wanted to point out that only a few of those books fall into our scope, but you found them already yourself :)

There are also some Creative Commons-licensed works in that list: Lessig, Doctorow... Definitely outside of our scope, but maybe interesting for a sub- or sister project. Also, there are already several audiobook versions of CC texts out there.
