question about book

Hi everyone,

Question about whether a book would be acceptable for turning into an audiobook for Legamus:

Death of an Airman by Christopher St John Sprigg (1907-1937)
Published in 1934
So far, so good.

I have a hardcopy, but found no fulltext online.

https://books.google.nl/books?id=ZVphngEACAAJ (this is the 1st edition; but for me in the Netherlands this is only a preview)
(I could find no text at gutenberg.au or elsewhere).

https://books.google.nl/books?id=W4V4CAAAQBAJ --> this is the British Library Crime Classics reprint from 2015 that I have as hardcopy. No fulltext online. The book colophon clearly states that of course the 2015 introduction is copyrighted, but claims no copyright on the original 1934 text that was used.

Will it be OK if I read this book from my hard copy?

Thanks for your advice, in advance.
Anna

As long as you're sure you got the edition which is now in the public domain, I see no problem with reading from a hardcopy.
We did it before.

In my understanding the edition makes no difference for EU copyright.
The author and translator must be dead for more than 70 years, the text must have been first published within the 70 years after the authors death. When this is the case, the text is in the public domain, even if the edition is from this year.

Happy recording! :D

I noticed that this books is available on Kindle;
https://www.amazon.com/Death-Airman-C-J ... 8&qid=&sr=

I wouldn't object to spending the $0.76 if you intend to proceed with the project and need a DPL.

Cheers

Thank you for the offer, Algy, but a DPL is no longer necessary. You may enjoy the recording without looking out for errors ;)

Oops - obviously I don't visit this forum very often!

Congratulations to Anna for a great piece of narration.
